Corporate Governance
Board Members
As the CEO of ICDC Investment Co. Ltd (now Centum), he spearheaded the privatization of the company's management structure after 32 years under the parent state corporation. Tony built the management team and established operations and systems from inception, managing an equity portfolio of over 40 companies. His responsibilities included originating and executing Private Equity Investments and representing ICDCI on portfolio company boards.
Tony's prior roles include being a management consultant at PwC in the economics division and Vice-President Regional Corporate Finance at Citibank Kenya. He holds an MBA in Finance and Marketing from Georgetown University and a BSc in Agricultural Economics from Wye College (now merged with Imperial College).
James has over 30 years experience in the insurance sector starting out at Hogg Robinson Insurance Brokers in 1986 where he rose through the ranks to become a Senior Manager.
In 1993, he joined Lion of Kenya Insurance Company as the Technical Manager, rising to Assistant General Manager, Deputy Managing Director and finally as the Managing Director from 1997 to 2003. He joined the Boards of First Chartered Securities, Insurance Company of East Africa and Lion of Kenya in 1996. In 2003,
He was appointed Chairman of First Chartered Securities. James is also the Chairman of the ICEA LION Group, NCBA Bank Group and Mitchell Cotts Kenya Group. In 2015 he was appointed Chairman of the Board of the Capital Markets Authority.
Patrick holds a BSC in Business Administration from USIU and is a Certified Public Accountant and alumnae of IESE Business School. He is also a Member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and a Member of the Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS) Japan.
He previously worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers and Shell Exploration and Production Kenya BV between 1988 and 1992. Prior to his present position, he was the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Mitchell Cotts Kenya Group until January 2006. Patrick is also a Non–Executive Director of Mitchell Cotts Group Limited and a director of several other companies.
David is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (FCA), a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK).
He has over 40 years professional experience and has been involved in the audits of banks and financial institutions, manufacturing companies, hotels and tourism, aviation companies, agricultural and insurance companies. He has several years’ experience in General Practice, Taxation and Consultancy, IT and others. He was a Partner at Ernst & Young, East Africa, from 1970 until June 2006. He was Chairman in 1988 and Senior Partner in 2002. He was a member of the Panel of Experts of the UN appointed Mediator of the East African Community involved in the evaluation of assets and distribution of liabilities for Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.
He is the Chairman, Non-Executive Chairman and Non-Executive Director of numerous organisations spanning advertising & communications, manufacturing, education, properties and real estate, banking, insurance and reinsurance sectors.
Kennedy is an Advocate, Commissioner for Oaths & Notary Public, and a member of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK). Additionally, he is associated with the East Africa Law Society (EALS), Institute of Certified Public Secretaries of Kenya (ICPSK), and Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (ACIArb). With previous roles at Oil Libya Kenya Limited and legal practice at Ochieng’, Onyango, Kibet & Ohaga Advocates, Kennedy's achievements include winning theCompany Secretary of the Year Award at the ICS Kenya’s Champion of Governance (COG) Awards in 2015 and 2016, securing second and first runner-up positions in 2017 and 2018, and receiving a Commendation for Outstanding Contribution in the same years from the ICS.
Management Team
Before EARe, he served as a Senior Program Manager at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), based in Johannesburg, South Africa. Mr. Maina's leadership journey in reinsurance began as an Engineering Underwriter at Munich Reinsurance, in the Nairobi office that was responsible for the East Africa region.He then joined Swiss Re Africa Limited, where he held various roles, including Regional Manager for Nairobi office and Client Manager for several African countries while based in Johannesburg, South Africa. In 2007, he became the Business Partner/Director in the Swiss Re Consultancy unit based in the Head Office, Zurich, Switzerland.
Educationally, Mr. Maina hols a Masters of Science from the University of London, a Master of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Nairobi. He is a member of the Fellow of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA) and serves as an Executive Committee Member of the Africa Insurance Organization (AIO).
Prior to joining EARe in April 2020, Purity was a Senior Manager at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Kenya. She worked with PwC for more than nine (9) years in Kenya, South Africa, the United States of America (USA), and the United Kingdom (UK), gaining extensive experience and sound knowledge of the re(insurance) and financial services sectors.
She holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from the Warwick Business School, University of Warwick and a Bachelor of Commerce degree (Finance Option) from the University of Nairobi. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (ICPAK).
Calisto joined East Africa Re in October 2018. Prior to his tenure with East Africa Re, he assumed the role of CEO at Old Mutual Insurance Company in Rwanda. In the earlier stages of his career, from 2009 to 2013, he held the position of Managing Director at Continental Re's Nairobi office.
He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Education, specializing in Economics and Business Studies.Additionally, he is an associate member of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII) and an affiliate of the Insurance Institute of Kenya (IIK). Calisto is an alumnus of IESE Business School in Madrid, Spain, and Cranfield School of Management in the United Kingdom.
Benard holds both a Masters of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology Management. In addition, he is a Certified Information Security Manager (CISM), Certified in Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) and a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist(MCTS). He is also an active member of ISACA.
Beatrice joined East Africa Re in November 2022. Prior to her tenure with East Africa Re, she served as a Human Resource Business Partner at Jubilee Health Insurance. In the foundational years of her professional development, Beatrice held diverse roles within the Human Resources department at Barclays Bank Kenya (now ABSA Bank).
She holds a Master's in Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in Economics and Sociology from the University of Nairobi. She is a certified Human Resource professional and a practicing member of the Institute of Human Resource Management. Her goal is to use her expertise to drive organizational success through effective people strategies and leadership.
David joined East Africa Re in 2018 with over 15 years’ experience in a wide range of disciplines such as accounting, assurance, risk management, insurance supervision and policy development. David has provided risk management consultancy services since 2014. Prior to this, David was an Assistant Director at the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) within the Insurance Supervision Department having joined the Authority in 2007. Prior to joining the BMA, David worked for Ernst and Young Bermuda and KPMG Kenya in their respective assurance departments, gaining valuable experience in auditing and financial reporting.
David is a Certified Public Accountant and a member of the Institute of Certified Public Accountant of Kenya (ICPAK), holds a Bachelor of Commerce (finance) degree from the University of Nairobi and an Associated in Risk Management from the Insurance Institute of America.
As a Chartered Insurer and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII), he is dedicated to maintaining the highest professional standards in his field. Dennis also holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration (MBA) with a major in Strategic Management from the University of Nairobi and a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
